Corona del Sol High School: A Public Health Concern?
Corona del Sol High school in Tempe (part of the Phoenix metro area) has been receiving greater attention in the local news lately. The reason is a probable high incidence or reported cancer cases from teachers at the school. 8 confirmed cases of benign brain tumors have been found in teachers that teach at Corona del Sol. This is, seemingly, a  higher incidence than one would expect in a distribution. However, measuring results from one school to another are difficult with such small numbers due to many confounding variables.

Some people are pointing to the environmental conditions of the school as a possible cause. Including an aging ventilation system and mold found throughout the school. What is in question is whether the reported cases of benign brain tumors are significantly higher than at other schools. At first, one may think that (8) cases is high, but it is possible that this type of data hasn't really been recorded previously. The state health department doesn't normally track the number of benign brain tumors from a particular school, so it's difficult to determine exactly what the baseline would be.

It certainly is an interesting case from a public health standpoint. I've provided a few links on this page to articles about the situation at Corona del Sol and will add more as they become available.

Disclaimer: though I am a public health specialist with the state health department, I am in no way representing the state in any investigation of Corona del Sol. This page is my personal page as I take an interest in many public health situations and Corona del Sol is in the Phoenix metro area where I've lived since 2001.
